Trutex School Trousers Review: Are They Worth the Extra Cost?
Editor's Note (2026): This review is based on my family's experience using Trutex school trousers and shirts in 2014. I've updated the article to improve readability and keep the information relevant while preserving my original opinions and experience.
Buying school uniform sounds simple until you're trying to find school trousers that actually fit your child properly.
When my three boys were at primary and secondary school, finding trousers that fitted well became one of the biggest challenges every September.
For my youngest son, it wasn't usually too difficult because elasticated waist trousers were widely available for younger children.
My older two boys were a completely different story.
They've always preferred slimmer fitting school trousers rather than the traditional baggier style. The difficulty was finding slim fit trousers that also offered the right combination of waist and leg measurements.
If the waist fitted, the legs were far too long.
If the length was right, they were too tight around the waist.
It was hugely frustrating.
Most years I found myself buying trousers that fitted around the waist, then spending time shortening the legs before they could even be worn to school.
Then I discovered Trutex, and it was quickly apparent that they are a brand that finally thought about families facing exactly the same problem.
Why We Chose Trutex School Trousers
One of the first things that stood out to me was the sizing.
Rather than simply choosing by age, Trutex offered different waist and leg measurements, making it much easier to find a better fit.
That might sound like a small detail, but it made a huge difference.
Instead of compromising on either the waist or the leg length, I could choose trousers that suited each child far better than many of the supermarket alternatives we'd previously bought.
As any parent knows, comfortable school trousers make a real difference when children are wearing them five days a week.
Our Experience with Trutex Slim Fit School Trousers
We chose the Trutex Slim Fit School Trousers.
Straight away they looked much smarter than many of the cheaper trousers we'd bought in previous years.
My boys wore blazers as part of their school uniform and the slimmer fit complemented the rest of their uniform perfectly. They looked smart without being restrictive and were exactly the style they preferred.
The trousers featured:
Slim fit tailored design
Zip fly fastening
Internal waist adjusters
Front and back pockets
Matching belt included
The internal waist adjusters were particularly useful because they allowed a little flexibility around the waist without the trousers looking oversized.
Quality That Lasted
One thing I quickly noticed was the quality of the fabric.
School trousers have a tough life.
They need to survive classroom floors, playgrounds, sports fields, washing machines and tumble dryers, often several times every week.
During our experience, the Trutex trousers coped extremely well with everyday school life.
According to Trutex, the trousers also featured:
Easy care fabric
Suitable for tumble drying
Stain resistant finish
Durable anti-pill fabric
As a busy parent, anything that reduced ironing and stood up well to frequent washing was always appreciated.
Trutex School Shirts
Alongside the trousers, my son also wore the Trutex short sleeve school shirts.
He would only wear short sleeved shirts, so finding comfortable ones was just as important.
The shirts came in packs of two and were made from easy iron fabric.
They also featured a chest pocket and remained comfortable throughout the school day.
Like the trousers, they felt noticeably better quality than many of the supermarket school shirts we'd previously purchased.
Were They Worth Paying More?
There's no denying that Trutex school uniform cost a little more than supermarket alternatives.
At first I wondered whether the extra cost would really be worthwhile.
Looking back, I genuinely think it was.
Better fitting trousers meant fewer alterations.
The quality of the fabric meant they lasted well throughout the school year.
What really impressed me was how well they coped with everyday school life. My boys certainly didn't spend their days standing still. They were constantly on the move, sitting on classroom floors, running around at break times and coming home with the usual signs of a busy school day. Despite being washed week after week, the trousers continued to hold their shape, looked smart and didn't quickly become thin or shabby like some cheaper pairs we had bought in the past.
The easy-care fabric was another bonus. As a busy mum with three boys, I appreciated anything that made the endless cycle of washing and ironing a little easier. The trousers washed well, dried quickly and were soon ready to be worn again.
Most importantly, the boys were comfortable wearing them every day. When children feel comfortable in their school uniform, they're far less likely to complain about getting dressed in the morning, and that's something every parent can appreciate.
Sometimes spending a little more initially can actually save money in the long run if you're replacing school trousers less often throughout the year.
Would I Recommend Trutex School Trousers?
Based on our experience, yes.
Finding school trousers with the right waist measurement, leg length and modern slim fit had always been frustrating, but Trutex offered a much better fit than many of the options we'd tried previously.
If you've ever stood in a supermarket wondering why every pair of school trousers seems either too short, too long or doesn't fit properly around the waist, you're certainly not alone.
For our family, Trutex solved a problem we'd been dealing with for years.
Even now, I still remember how relieved I felt to finally find school trousers that looked smart, fitted properly and lasted well throughout the school year.
