Review: Symprove - a solution for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

My honest Symprove review showing the Symprove probiotic drink and my 12-week IBS experience with reduced bloating, pain and constipation.

Editor’s Note (2026): This review reflects my personal experience using Symprove in 2014. While the product and research may have evolved since then, I’ve kept this review online because many readers still find it helpful when researching Symprove for IBS.

My Symprove Review

I don’t often describe a product as life-changing, but after completing a 12-week course of Symprove, that’s genuinely how it felt for me.

Before trying Symprove, I’d accepted that living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) was simply something I had to put up with. Daily life revolved around worrying about what I could eat, whether I’d trigger painful symptoms and how I’d cope if an IBS flare-up struck while I was out.

When I was offered the opportunity to try Symprove for 12 weeks, I hoped it might help, but I honestly didn’t expect such a noticeable difference.

My IBS Symptoms Before Symprove

My IBS mainly caused:

  • Sharp abdominal pain

  • Frequent bloating

  • Constipation

  • Anxiety around eating certain foods

Like many people living with IBS, I spent years trying to identify my trigger foods. It often felt like a never-ending elimination process, with certain foods completely off-limits because I knew they’d almost certainly lead to a flare-up.

My GP had prescribed Buscopan to help manage the abdominal pain, but once a flare-up started, it didn’t always provide enough relief.

When Did I Notice a Difference?

For me, the first improvements appeared after around three weeks of taking Symprove.

One of the biggest changes wasn’t just physical—it was the confidence that slowly returned. As my symptoms became more manageable, I found myself worrying less about eating and feeling much more relaxed.

As the weeks went on, those improvements continued.

By the end of the 12-week programme, I was experiencing:

  • Significantly less abdominal pain

  • Much less bloating

  • Improved constipation

  • Greater confidence around food

  • Far fewer IBS flare-ups

For me, that meant being able to enjoy everyday life without constantly thinking about my digestive symptoms.

What Is Symprove?

Symprove is a water-based food supplement containing live, active bacteria designed to reach the gut alive.

Unlike some probiotic supplements, Symprove uses what it calls a Unique Delivery System (UDS), which is designed to help the beneficial bacteria survive the journey through the stomach so they can reach the gut.

It is:

  • Water-based

  • Mango and passionfruit flavoured

  • Gluten free

  • Dairy free

  • Gentle on the digestive system

  • Suitable for daily use

How I Took Symprove

Throughout the 12-week programme, I took Symprove every morning on an empty stomach before breakfast, following the recommended instructions.

Consistency was important, and I made it part of my morning routine.

Would I Recommend Symprove?

Based on my own experience, yes.

After years of living with IBS symptoms, I was genuinely surprised by how much of a difference Symprove made for me. It didn’t just reduce my physical symptoms—it also helped remove the constant worry that often came with eating.

Of course, IBS affects everyone differently, and no treatment works for every person. My experience won’t necessarily be the same as someone else’s, but I wanted to share my own journey in case it helps anyone considering whether to try Symprove.

For me, completing those 12 weeks was one of the best decisions I made for managing my IBS symptoms at the time.

Scientists at University College London (UCL) independently conducted one of the first studies comparing some of the most popular probiotic brands available in the UK, to test which products are likely to actually survive and thrive in the gut environment. The study used representative in-vitro test systems that allow understanding of the various factors that must be controlled to give the greatest chance of delivery of live, healthy bacteria to the lower gut.

Many popular probiotics do not deliver what they promise and are simply not robust enough for the human GI tract. Only one product met all three challenges (Symprove) – with several popular products failing all three challenges.
