Review: Imaginary Fred by Eoin Colfer & Oliver Jeffers
Imaginary Fred by Eoin Colfer & Oliver Jeffers
There are some children’s books that stay with you long after you have finished reading them, and Imaginary Fred is definitely one of those books for me. It is sweet, thoughtful, and quietly emotional in a way that both children and adults can appreciate.
Friendship is such an important part of life. Finding someone who understands you, supports you, and simply enjoys being around you is something truly special. What I love most about this story is the gentle reminder that there is someone out there for everyone, no matter who they are or where they come from.
Imaginary Fred is a wonderful collaboration between Eoin Colfer and Oliver Jeffers, and together they have created a story that feels both magical and meaningful.
The story follows Fred, an imaginary friend who appears whenever a child needs him. Fred is kind, loyal, patient, and always there when he is needed most. But being an imaginary friend also comes with sadness, because eventually the children he cares about make real friends of their own and slowly stop needing him. When that happens, Fred quietly fades away and waits until another child needs someone by their side.
Despite this, Fred never complains. He gives each friendship everything he has, always trying to be the best friend possible, even knowing it may only be temporary.
As the story unfolds, we follow Fred on his journey until he finally finds the one friend who truly feels like the perfect match for him. It is heartwarming, comforting, and surprisingly emotional for a picture book.
The illustrations throughout the book are absolutely beautiful and bring so much warmth and personality to the story. Oliver Jeffers has such a distinctive style, and the artwork perfectly captures both the joy and loneliness that Fred experiences. The illustrations add so much charm and really help bring the story to life.
This is one of those books that is genuinely lovely to read together as a family. My children both enjoyed listening to the story, talking about the characters, and taking in all the little details within the illustrations.
The hardback edition would make a beautiful gift for a child, especially for little ones who love imaginative stories about friendship and belonging. It is a book filled with warmth, kindness, and heart, and one I can easily see becoming a favourite on many bookshelves.
