Buying Crutches: A Journey of Acceptance and Empowerment

As I sit down to write this post I am filled with a mix of emotions - excitement, relief, and a sense of accomplishment. I reached a new milestone in my Chronic Illness journey: buying disability aids such as crutches/walking stick. While this may seem like a small and insignificant purchase to some, for me it marks a new era in my life. It serves as a reminder that my body is failing me.

I remember the day I first considered using crutches, feeling defeated and disheartened by the stark reality they represented. The idea of relying on such a visible aid was a tough pill to swallow, a constant reminder that my condition was not going to improve.

Support Network

It took a recommendation from my occupational therapist and unwavering encouragement from my husband and close friend to push me towards taking that leap. With their support, I finally mustered the courage to purchase the walking aids - crutches, a symbol of both my physical limitations and my inner strength. Making the decision to prioritize my well-being was a powerful moment of acceptance. It was a pivotal step towards achieving a healthy and fulfilling life.

Living with chronic illness, degenerative spinal issues, ME CFS, and fibromyalgia, has been a rollercoaster ride filled with ups and downs, setbacks and small victories. The decision to start using disability aids such as crutches/walking stick didn't come easily.

Resistance

For the longest time, I resisted the idea, thinking it symbolised a loss of independence or a sign of weakness. It's a harsh reminder of my condition and the limits it places on me. Don't get me wrong, my body constantly reminds me of its failings, but this walking stick makes it even more apparent. It's a symbol of the struggles I face every day.

However, as my symptoms persisted and mobility became increasingly challenging, I realised that these mobility aids were not a sign of weakness but a tool to help me navigate the world with more ease and hopefully less pain. Making the choice to purchase walking aids: crutches/walking stick was a decision to prioritise my well-being and comfort, rather than succumbing to societal stigma or my own pride.

Self-compassion and self-care

I want to focus on the importance of self-compassion and self-care. It's essential to take care of ourselves, especially when facing mobility challenges. And, embracing mobility aids is not a sign of defeat but a step towards empowerment and improved quality of life. It's okay to ask for help, to adapt your lifestyle to accommodate your needs, and to celebrate each milestone no matter how small it may seem.

By sharing my personal experience and insights, I hope to reach those who may be struggling with similar decisions or transitions in their own journey.

Final Thoughts

As I take each step with my new crutches/walking stick, I am reminded of the strength and resilience that carries me through each day. My journey with chronic illness is not unique, and I find solace in knowing that I am not alone.

Here's to embracing new milestones, finding moments of joy in the midst of difficulties, and continuing to share our stories with courage and authenticity.

Thank you for being a part of my journey.
